While in high school Dirk enlisted in the Navy in hopes of becoming a Navy SEAL. He worked on the Security Force on land and shipboard security where he spent time training extensively for shipboard firefighting.  He was proud to work his way up from being a grunt dragging a fire hose through the engine room to a Fire Investigator leading his own team.

Turns out leading teams would become his passion in life. After the Navy he joined the Army National Guard where he was certified as a Combat Life Saver. After being discharged, he started a career in IT, but quickly realized the sedentary lifestyle was not one he enjoyed.

Dirk heard about CrossFit from a Mixed Martial Artist friend. The first WOD he did was from the CrossFit main site:

5 Rounds
10 Wall Climb 15 Toes to bar
20 Box Jumps

It kicked his ass and he knew CrossFit was for him.

Dirk started working out more. He completed the Couch to 5K and the Couch to 10K running programs, signed up for a kickboxing class, trained and lead a team of Tough Mudders and realized leading people to a healthier lifestyle was what he wanted to do.

In October 2011, he finally convinced a friend to join a CrossFit gym with him. In February 2012 he got his Level 1 Trainer Certificate and in July 2012 his Movement and Mobility Trainer Certificate.  He followed that up with the USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sport Performance Coach Certification in September of 2013.

To date, he has completed 4 Tough Mudders (and even got the Tough Mudder tattoo on his bicep), and is preparing for a GoRuck Challenge with plans to complete the GoRuck Beached and Ascent Challenges as well.

Dirk enjoys researching techniques and cues to develop skills that will lead people to a long and healthy life.  He has a long list of seminars and certifications he wishes to attend in the near future.

Oh, and at 6’4”, burpees suck. A lot.
