Valerie Gonsalves – Coach

“Recursive rocks because our community is comprised of some of the most solid, kind, and respectable people on the planet.”

CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
First Aid/CPR/AED Certified

Valerie is not your traditional athlete. Though she was a varsity swimmer in high school, she hung up her goggles in favor of a red solo cup during the first part of college. While studying abroad in the Dominican Republic she began running through a banana grove behind her home and discovered a way to torture herself for long periods of time, alone, on land, as she had in the pool. Since then she has run two marathons, multiple half marathons and countless other races.

Valerie started CrossFit because she loves bargains and there was a Groupon, which forced her to commit to a Foundations class. She thought she was in good shape when she attended her first class and quickly realized the ability to run for long periods of time was not the only marker of fitness.

Further, she discovered CrossFit was a good compliment to running. Since starting in 2012, she has gained muscle and no longer experiences chronic inflammation in her IT band and her shin splints have healed.

Valerie wandered into Recursive after running by the sandwich board on the bike path. Originally she intended just to drop in once a week, but was quickly persuaded by the fantastic community to sign up as one of the original members.

She’s been an assistant coach for several years and finally decided to complete her Level 1 Certification so she could continue to help members reach their goals. She looks forward to working with the Recursive community to further develop her coaching skills.

Valerie’s sweet pup Lexi often accompanies her to Recursive. Lexi was rescued in March 2016 and Edrick happily shares his gym toys with her. Outside of the gym, Valerie continues to run regularly and is planning to complete her third marathon in her hometown of Chicago in October 2017.

Additionally, she is an avid yoga practitioner and plays recreational ultimate Frisbee in the summer. When not coaching, she works as a forensic psychologist for the State of Wisconsin.

Take your weakness and make it your strength.
